Delivering bespoke online solutions requires a very particular combination of skills. In the first instance, it’s imperative to have vision. By this, we mean the ability to quickly grasp exactly what our client needs to achieve, to picture what that might look like and – crucially – to visualise precisely how it will all fit together.

It may sound obvious, but organisational skills are key. You need a partner who can clearly and accurately map out the path from initial brief to final delivery, with all the required stops along the way, so all the stakeholders know what they need to be doing, and when.

Good communication skills are essential. Not everyone involved will be technically-minded, which means that an ability to write proposals and specifications in plain English becomes a massive advantage. It means that everyone is on the same page, not just the geeks.

Design skills are part of the required mix too, because there’s no point in delivering a solution with all the correct functionality but an interface which nobody wants to use. User Experience (UX) needs to be at the forefront of everything we do.

Finally, of course, there’s coding expertise. At the risk of blowing our own trumpet, we think we’re rather good at that. We’ve yet to be set a functional challenge that we haven’t been able to code our way out of, and we’ve been set a fair few knotty ones over the last few years.

Content Submission System

Our clients asked if we could create a system for their customers to submit content for a printed catalogue. Previously this had been done offline; customers had to fax or post their entries. We transformed our client’s work-flow: an online CRM allows them to manage and communicate with their customers easily and efficiently. Sales estimations accuracy has been vastly improved, and – most importantly – there has been a measurable cost benefit to our client as a result of the significant efficiencies achieved.

One of our regular clients asked us to develop an online portal where their 10,000 staff members can enter a competition. Video upload and integration with the Vimeo API was key, as was designing the information for a global audience: Japanese, Chinese and Korean were among the 15 language versions produced. On the back-end, our clients can approve and rank competition entries as well as create a shortlist for executive judging.

One of our largest bespoke projects: a tailor-made Content Management System for the exhibitions industry which we designed from the ground up. At the core is a cutting edge modular CMS that allows our clients to easily manage quite complex responsive website layouts. Specialised “widgets” were designed for managing industry-specific requirements, such as exhibiting companies, press releases and conference schedules. These widgets have their own dedicated interfaces which perfectly balance flexibility with ease-of-use.
